My Process

 It all begins with a sketch.  I am very consistent in taking time every day to draw in my sketch book, I consider this meditative time.  Although my work is 3D, they are very much drawings – in space.  The shadows they create are informed by the often changing light passing through the form.  Many of my forms need a great deal of pre-construction planning. 

What is Rattan Reed?

The “reed” I use to build my sculptures is from the inside part of the rattan plant, which grows in long vines. The hard outside peel is used for “cane” and has the fingernail-like texture. The inside part is cut and shaped to the various sizes for reed.
